Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge certain calls from the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
