The star has given the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which works to preserve the United Kingdom's small concert spaces.

Fender was awarded the cheque on October 16 as his latest record his work was chosen as the top album of the past year.

The musician has chosen to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the crucial part local spots fulfilled in his initial steps.

"I couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was just getting going," stated the artist. "These spaces are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these locations have shut down – approximately 16% of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to support the industry, by including a modest fee to their ticket prices, which supports independent venues.

He also took part, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to support thirty-eight grassroots venues across the UK.

These funds assisted spaces that were confronting potential shutdown due to issues stemming from water damage, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Additional spaces received monetary aid in upgrading infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted performers and concertgoers.

"The concept that funds from shows in major spaces supports the independent spots, where it all starts for artists like me, is just sensible," the star has stated.

Previously, Ezra Collective gave their prize money to the local youth club that developed their group, alongside other independent music bodies.

Additionally the 1994 recipients the group gave their award to a MS organization after a acquaintance was diagnosed the condition.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," said singer Small. "The cash was the bonus but we could do without the cherry, because we had the cake. So our success impacted another person's life."

In the past week, the MVT revealed it had saved two grassroots venues in the South East, by bringing them into local control.

One venue in that area and the second in the city were purchased under the community ownership scheme, which is supported by a national body and supporters who purchase "ownership units" in the venues.
