Each time a prominent honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded that year
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
