Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
