Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying these medications must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become starving," described one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
