European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
